After watching Colbert on Meet the Press, I have two thoughts on why his run (if it ends up being legal) is going to be good for America.1) If he can, why not me?
With the inevitability drum beating for Hillary Clinton and more and more 'slam dunk' races, it's not wonder so many feel detached for the process. But, if this crazy man from TV can actually run against more serious contenders, it might just show that entering a race for anything isn't as hard as it may seem. Is some valiant hero going to be persuaded to take on the '08 contenders, crush media expectations and bring change to Washington? Not likely. But, perhaps some 'regular guy/girl' who likes to watch The Daily Show and the Colbert Report will see how weak the barrier into politics is and decide to throw his/her hat into the ring to make the community better.
2) A Convention Worth Watching
On MTP, Colbert said a victory would be getting 1 delegate from South Carolina so that the delegation would have to say "South Carolina casts one ballot for their native son, Stephen Colbert." Conventions used to be worth having. In 1960 there were hardly any primaries, JFK had won big on the trail but it wasn't a done deal until the convention. With so many delegates being selected on Super Tuesday, it's possible we'll have a brokered convention again. But, if we don't and Colbert gets a delegate, it will be a bold reminder of glory days gone by.
