NJ and VA are both Gubernatorial races and are the most high level races we have tonight. Traditionally VA votes for the party NOT in the White House (as it just did today). NJ is a nail biter because up until a few weeks ago it looked like the GOP candidate was going to run away with it. However, ads exposing the GOP candidate for what he really was + a surge in support for the Independent candidate turned the race into a toss up.
NY is interesting because for the first time in a very long time, a Republican is not going to get elected. The race represents the GOP infighting as the Republican candidate dropped out due to pressure in favor of the Conservative candidate.
CA might be the forgotten race but it is still a congressional race and thus give whichever party another voice in Washington DC. Plus, if NJ and NY turn out bad for the Dems, they can point to California as a beacon of hope and tie the results to "local issues".
Maine is important because going into election day, support for keeping gay marriage in Maine was tied with those opposed to it. If it fails, it will be the first voter referendum to give the thumbs up to marriage equality. (a similar issue is on the ballot in WA but less fun to watch b/c it is just about Domestic Partnerships)
Thank you Ross. I had a long talk with my dad about the WA DP thing. I convinced him it was a good first step and without it passing legislators had no incentive to push for actual marriage...which then sparked a "why do they have to call it marriage" argument. Which I totally won :-) C'mon Maine don't be dumb.
A.Cast. on CNN just made a really stupid comment. He said we may learn Dems can't even win in New York. Well A.Cast. guess what? Dems never win that district and tonight the Republican candidate won't either. Quit being a stupid piece of crap.

The races to watch:
NJ Governor
VA Governor
NY 23
CA 10
Maine Ballot Measure 1
Interesting that the exit polls in Virginia say Obama not a big factor.
Same in New Jersey
I'm kind of surprised they haven't called VA for the Republican.
The White House is doing a good job pretending it doesn't care about the election return.
Aides: Obama Not Watching Election Returns"
I'm guessing they will call it for the Republican in Virginia very soon.
VA called for McDonnell
Polls now closed in NJ.
okay but explain why these are the races to watch - for those of us political neophytes tell me the significant of these races.
Well neophyte, here is a quick rundown.

Early returns from NJ do not look good for the Dems.
Best scoreboard of the night goes to Talking Points Memo

Ms. Brown doesn't understand the difference between citizen referendums and legislative actions. Do some homework.
I love the Rajin' Cajun.
Mary is watching chocolate and pink. With the white of the GOP, she's Neapolitan ice cream.
NJ returns seem to be tightening up.
But she's got the best team on television. And THE WALL!
Rachel in on MSNBC, finally some smart coverage of the races.
Early results look pretty good for Maine 1
NJ numbers looking bad once again.
This isn't election related really but WTF is up with Harry Reid being a pansy on healthcare?
I don't think Harry Reid realizes he lives in a blue state now.
McDonnell speaking now.
Bloomberg successfully purchases NYC Mayor race
...again.
Just switched to Fox for a second, always good for a laugh.
you can go ahead and call Owens over Hoffman if you want
NJ goes to the GOP.
something funky is going on in NYC mayor numbers - not quite a landslide
Now things looking bad in Maine.
With NY and Maine too close to call, I'm calling it a night - at least as blogging goes.
ahem - where's the recap? Summary? Analysis?
